The Golden Circle is a very popular and instructive tour. During this excursion, you will encounter Iceland in all its aspects: its geological and natural wonders, its historical past and present and its rich cultural heritage, as well as folk beliefs in all kinds of hidden people—elves, trolls and guardian spirits. We discover all these elements in one amazing day tour.
Highlights include Nesjavellir Geothermal Power Plant; Thingvallavatn, Iceland’s largest natural lake; Thingvellir National Park; Gullfoss, the “Golden Waterfall”, which is Europe’s second most powerful waterfall; the Geyser geothermal area, where Strokkur spouts its hot water and steam up to 25-30 meters high; and Kerid, a beautifully shaped crater.
We drive towards the largest Icelandic lake, Thingvallavatn, where we visit Nesjavellir geothermal power plant. From there, we continue to Thingvellir National Park, the site of Iceland’s first parliament that was established in 930. Thingvellir became a UNESCO world heritage site in 2004 for its unique geological features and historical importance for the Icelandic nation.
In the mountain Ármannsfell just north of Þingvellir, lives Armann, the guardian spirit of the area, who was half troll and half man. It is said that he was the first one to inhabit the area of Thingvellir. There is also a story about how the river Öxará (Axe River) got its name from a battle of a brave young man and a vicious troll woman named Jóra. This troll woman Jóra used to live just south of Selfoss, and one day she went mad when her father’s horse was losing during a horse fight.
After that, we drive over the mountain pass Lyngdalsheidi to the majestic Gullfoss, “Golden Waterfall”, Europe's second most powerful waterfall. We then visit the Geyser geothermal area, where Strokkur spouts its hot water and steam up to 25-30 metres high. We continue our tour through the southern lowlands. Before reaching our hotel, we stop for a short visit to the beautifully shaped Kerid crater.
